Revolutionising Workplace Wellbeing with AXA's Personal Health App
In a landscape where traditional workplace wellbeing programmes often adopt a one-size-fits-all approach, primarily focusing on physical health, AXA Health UK identified a pressing need for a more user-centric and behavioural-led strategy.
Recognising that effective mental health support can significantly enhance work-day quality, AXA aimed to develop a platform that offers personalised mental and physical health support to its members, empowering them to take actionable steps towards their wellbeing.

Challenge
Our mission was to conceptualise and execute a behavioural-based health and wellbeing framework within the AXA insurance group. This involved creating a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) for a mental wellbeing app that could be scaled and adapted to meet the diverse needs of its users.
The initiative sought to leverage the expertise of health professionals and incorporate user feedback to ensure the app was both effective and user-centric.
Building healthy habits, one step at a time…
To achieve this we embarked on a comprehensive development process:
Customer Research: Conducting interviews and surveys to understand the users’ needs, emotional pathways, and barriers to wellbeing.
Expert Collaboration: Partnering with healthcare professionals, including doctors and therapists, to curate content that addresses the mental and physical health needs of users.
Prototyping and Testing: Developing wireframes and prototypes to test our hypotheses and gather insights. This iterative process involved launching a Beta version of the app, collecting feedback, and making necessary adjustments.
Design and Development: Focusing on UI design and brand integration, we utilised tools like Figma and Zeplin for seamless design-to-development handoffs. A significant part of this phase was establishing a scalable design system inspired by industry best practices, which was refined through user testing to ensure a cohesive user experience.
The result was a highly accessible, user-centred mental wellbeing app that:
Empowers Users: Provides personalised health and wellbeing strategies, fostering a proactive approach to mental and physical health.
Incorporates Behavioural Science: Utilises a behavioural-based framework to offer solutions that are tailored to the unique challenges and needs of individual users.
Ensures Scalability and Usability: Features a robust design system that prioritises usability and scalability, ensuring that the app remains effective as it evolves to meet the changing needs of its user base.
A scalable, accessible Design system
Playing a pivotal role in assisting building out a robust design system, drawing inspiration from industry-leading practices like Material Design. Working closely with the team, I prioritised usability and scalability, keeping on brand with AXA’s style kit, while integrating valuable user insights from testing phases.
Through iterative refinement, we optimised our system to better meet user needs. This approach ensured a cohesive and user-friendly experience.
